The Bluesheld the Bulldogs goalless to record a 134-point win in the mud at home to keep a firm grip on seventh spot.

Ballan hit its straps with a seven-goal third term, ignited by the play of the day from midfielder Shaun Campbell. Campbell’s mid-air volley from the centre clearance hit Sam Hitchings, who found Dan King for the third of his seven goals.

Smythesdale coach Stephen Frys praised the efforts of his charges, despite losing three players to injury.

“I’m very proud of our effort today, we made them work for it. Our attack on the footy was pleasing,” Frys said.

The Bulldogs lost midfielders John Cranny and Aaron Cameron to shoulder issuesand Stephen Smith to a possible rib injury.

The Dogs were best served by Rylan Rattley, Damien Kennedy and Mark Hocking, who never stopped working despite a one-man bench and the trying conditions. For the Blues,King, Campbell,Kyle Doyle andDanny Mullane led the way.

After the win, Ballan coach Mark Williams spoke about the future in light of his new two-year contract.

“We want to keep this list together. We have seven or eight players aged between 21-25 and another nine in the 25-28 bracket, so the future’s looking good. Today was very pleasing, the boys got the job done,” he said.

3. What thing couldn’t you live without and what are your three favourite things?

The one thing I couldn’t live without would be my internet connection; particularly my email. My three favourite things are food, four-wheel drives and all of the people I know.

4. If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and what would you eat?

Prince William. And we would have a scotch fillet steak.

5. What do you know now that you wish you had known before?

The basics of topics like sociology and political science. But in saying that, life is about learning.

6. If you had a magic wand, what would you wish for?

An improvement in the social fabric of our community. It’s unfortunate that we have people from disadvantaged backgrounds in our community and I wish there was more opportunity for self-improvement so that we could all get along together.

She pulled it off but there was about 100 people in there at the time.

9. What’s a defining moment in your life?

There’s so many. But probably receiving the top performance award for agricultural science diploma class.

10. What do you daydream about?

GOT IT: Panmure goal keeper Eliza Smith can’t prevent Nirranda goal attack Joanna Couch from getting to the ball first. Picture: Rob Gunstone.

DEFENDER Rose Delaney has added another string to her bow and led her team to a valuable win along the way.

Delaney was best on court in Nirranda’s 48-36 win over Panmure at Nirranda.

With regular goal keeper Callen Bourke missing the game, Delaney moved from her normal posting at goal defence to fill the void left by Bourke.

It was a successful tranistion as she teamed well with Georgia Haberfield at wing defence to give the Blues a winning edge.

Nirranda coach Anna Murnane said she was thrilled with the way her team fought out such a tight contest.

“We were a couple of goals up at quarter time and then they came back and leveled the score and the game was still in the balance at three-quarter-time,” Murnane said.

“But the girls played well for the whole game and we were able to keep going and finish it off in the last quarter.

“We are just going out there trying to win every time we play and if we make finals that is a bonus.”

The Blues are seventh, just one game from the top five.

INTERLOCK: Crocker’s Auto Electrical Service installs interlock devices.
Nanjing Night Net

DRINK-DRIVERS convicted of high-range or repeat offences are having to pay thousands of dollars to have alcohol interlock devices fitted to their vehicles. But it is hoped the impost will save lives and give offenders the chance to get back on the road sooner – legally and sober.Legislation making interlocks mandatory came into effect in NSW on February 1.An interlock is a breath-testing device connected to a vehicle’s ignition.

If the interlock detects alcohol on the driver’s breath it prevents the vehicle starting.

A Riverina court is now regularly imposing interlocks on drivers who are convicted of high-range drink driving or repeated mid-range.The drivers must first serve a driving disqualification period before they can apply for an interlock licence. The minimum period for an interlock device is 12 months.Costs of installing and servicing interlocks are paid for by the driver and can be around $2200 a year.

Drivers who fail to meet interlock requirements can be banned from driving for an additional five years.

“It’s early days yet, but I think overall it’s a good piece of legislation to get people back on the road sooner and able to get on with their lives,” said Wagga criminal lawyer, David Barron.

“And it’s a good prevention because every time they get in the car they are reminded (about drink-driving) because they have to blow in the machine.

“Their passengers are also reminded, as well.

“It has a real deterrence effect.”

Mr Barron said interlock was not a cheap option, but points to financial assistance that can be given to people short on cash.

According to the Centre for Road Safety, interlock service providers offer a concession rate of 35 per cent off the standard cost of installing, leasing, servicing and removing interlocks for people who have afull rate pensioner concession card, a health care card or a Department of Veterans Affairs gold card.

A number of safeguards are in place to stop people gettingaround their interlocks. For example, the device takes a photo of a person blowing into the device and requires drivers to pull over and provide samples throughout a journey.
